What Is The Difference Between Top Entry Valves And Side Entry Valves?

The core differences between a top ball valve (top ball valves) and an end ball valve (side ball valves) are as follows:
1.Structure and installation methods
Head-ball valve
Structure Features: Sphere, sealing ring, valve seat support are installed on top of valve body. The body is an integral design with a valve cover at the top.
Installation advantages:
Maintenance convenience: During maintenance, there is no need to remove the entire valve. All you have to do is open the valve cover to remove the sphere and replace the seal or valve seat. Suitable for underground pipelines or confined spaces.
Structural Strength: valve body design, reduced leakage points, high pressure bearing capacity, suitable for high pressure conditions (e.g. PN10 ~ PN420).
Special Design: Some models have fixed spheroids (DN100 and above) with high strength pivots to ensure stability at high temperature and pressure.
End-ball valves (side-mounted ball valve)
Structure features: The sphere is mounted on the side of the valve body, which can be either integral or segmented (two, three).
Installation advantages:
Compact: The structure is more compact and suitable for situations where space is limited (e.g. ships and mobile devices).
Cost effectiveness: simple manufacturing process, low cost, suitable for traditional industrial pipelines.
Split flexible: Large caliber valve can be used in three parts structure, easy to process and assemble.
ii. Application scenarios
Top inlet ball valve
Low temperature conditions: such as LNG tank outlet piping, insulate the low temperature zone by extending the valve stem to prevent packing and actuator freezing and cracking.
Buried pipe: fully welded valve body design, can be buried directly into the ground to avoid soil corrosion, service life up to 30 years.
High-frequency maintenance scenarios: in industries such as petroleum and chemicals, the overhead installation structure significantly reduces maintenance time and production losses.
Multi-way ball valve: Three-way ball valves and four-way ball valves are easier to load from the top than side-mounted ball valves due to the large size of the ball and the large cavity space in the middle.
End Inlet ball valve
Traditional industrial pipelines, such as water treatment and steam systems, have no special requirements for low temperature isolation and focus on cost-effectiveness.
Space constraints: compact design saves installation space, such as household water supply systems and small equipment.
Low pressure working conditions: For tubes with viscous media such as urea, the side integral structure facilitates installation of insulation jacket.
III. Comparison of performance
Top Inlet Ball Valve
Seal reliability is a two-way seal designed with springs at the rear of the metal valve seat to compensate for wear and tear, and the unbalanced force of the sphere helps seal when pressure is moderate. The sealing is achieved by pressing the valve seat and sphere directly, which requires high strength and precision of the material.
Maintenance convenience: Top mounting design, quick repair, replacement parts by removing valve cover, support online repair. Entire valves need to be removed or piped off, which can be costly to repair.
Pressure bearing capacity: high strength integral pivot fixed ball rod, high pressure bearing (PN10~PN420), suitable for high pressure situations. Simple structure, low pressure bearing capacity, suitable for conventional pressure conditions.
High cost (special materials + complex design). Low (standard design).
Applicable media Dust, particles and high-viscosity media, such as LNG, petroleum, chemical raw materials. Traditional media such as water, steam and air.
IV. INTRODUCTION Typical Application
Top inlet ball valve
West-East Gas Transmission Project: DN1200 trunnion ball valve is designed to withstand the impact of high pressure natural gas, stable operation for more than 10 years.
LNG Receiving Station: Fully welded top mounting ball valve buried directly into the ground, avoid valve stem corrosion by low temperature media, ensure long-term sealing.
End Inlet ball valve
Domestic water supply system: Brass side inlet ball valve that controls water flow through knobs for daily use.
Steam pipe: Stainless steel side inlet ball valve, high temperature and high pressure resistance, but regular inspection of wear and tear of sealing cover is required.
